Murdock Neighborhood Association Board Meeting
March 8, 2006
The meeting was held at the home of Jenny Hsieh.
The meeting was called to order at 7:45 p.m. by President Fanjoy.
Board Members Present: Fanjoy, Jones, Johnson, Livezey, Gomez, and Hsieh.
Board Member Absent: Murchan
Others attending: James Hsieh
Minutes of February 8 Board Meeting were approved with one change.
Treasurer’s Report:
- Two renewals and no expenses are reflected in the report.
- Eight memberships were delivered to her by Trixie at this meeting and are not reflected in the report.
- Balance is $1,638.08.
- There are some questions about memberships from late last year that actually should be in this year. Doris and Jenny will confer to identify those who should be credited with a current paid membership.
- We need another membership alert – to the e-mail list for starters.
- David submitted a receipt (approved for payment), and Charles needs to submit receipts for expenses from the mayoral forum.
Old Business
Traffic Committee:
- Judy Boehm reported by e-mail to Bob that the city traffic study was complete.
- Ora and Wunderlich qualifies for a crossing guard, but at a low priority based on the rating.
- There will be meeting at City Hall on March 16 at 9:30 a.m. to discuss the report. Bob will ask Judy to contact her committee for someone to attend. If no one volunteers, he will notify Doris to ask in the e-mail alert for someone to attend.
- Castle Glen & Wunderlich did not qualify because the problem there is cars, not pedestrians.
Tree trimming and lot setbacks:
- Doris heard from Linda’s office about setting a date to meet with Planning staff and her chief of staff Jim Cogan on lot setbacks.
- The tree trimming meeting to discuss the new fines and other changes is still to be scheduled.
Neighborhood Watch:
- Meeting held at Trixie’s with about 80% of the homes on Castle Glen, Wunderlich, and Oak Knoll that face the park represented.
- Larry has a meeting scheduled for the Oakhurst Court area. Charles reported of a neighbor on Ora who is interested and referred to David for advice on hosting.
Neighborhood Identification Signs:
Charles is getting information from the City. He will submit the forms to start the process, and we can then look at possible grant funding or other details.
New Business
Social and Events Committee (Jennifer Lee).
- Bob reported that Jennifer would like to have a Saturday social at the park 10 – noon on March 25. The focus will be on mothers and young children. The Board suggested she do flyers at the park to notify folks, and maybe post flyers on streets poles. Doris will include this in the e-mail alert. The Board authorized expenses up to $30 for drinks and cookies, balloons, etc.
- Doris will contact Cheryl for anything she has for welcoming committee – Jennifer has also expressed an interest in doing this. This is one of the items we should have for sign-ups at the next general meeting.
- The Board discussed the possibility of having a neighborhood movie night at a local theater. Trixie could contact Jim Zuur for something at the Camera 7 in Campbell. Idea was interesting; needs more discussion.
District One Candidate Forum: April 5
-
Format:
We should use the same format as mayor’s forum, and ask everyone to do the same jobs.Location:
We can use the auditorium or the library at Lynbrook. Of the two the library is the more intimate and more appropriate setting for this size event. We would still prefer the cafeteria, if that becomes available. - Include Ross Signorino although he does not meet the threshold requirements.
-
Arrangements:
David will reserve microphones. TJ will do question cards and name placards for speakers. David will be timer with Charles. Larry and Trixie do the screening. Trixie will ask Steve to moderate. - We cannot do refreshments in the library, but could do outside. Doris will contact Mark Burns for drinks. David will talk to Paul Boehm about what drinks or other supplies he is storing.
- Publicity:
- Flyer needed – Trixie will contact Steve about doing the flyer and distributing it. Flyer should include a reminder about April 26 General Meeting. Doris will contact Mary Engstrom about distributing flyers in Friar Way area – ask how many she will take so we can print and provide. Distributors might still be an issue; Trixie will ask Steve about status of block captains. Doris will check with city Finance office about non-delivery addresses.
- Need something on the website.
- Realtor newsletters – Charles will call Michelle Carr; Doris will contact Burns and others she can identify.
- Lynbrook and other high schools and journalism classes – Charles will notify.
- Linda LeZotte’s newsletter -- TJ will send copy.
- Trixie will ask Steve to do a press release.
- Do a sign up table for memberships and committees – Jenny will staff.
April 26 General Meeting – Be Prepared Night
- Have a sign-up table for memberships and committees, including the young family event committee, other social events, and the welcoming committee. Jenny will staff.
- Speakers are confirmed for SJ Prepared and ADT. David will recruit safety display by Orchard Supply, and work to get discount coupons.
- We can use the small portable mic. Speaker for SJ Prepared is bringing PP equipment; the wall will work as a screen.
- Lynbrook cafeteria is confirmed.
- Timing:
- 7:00 social and security display
- 7:30 MNA business
- 7:45 ADT and Larry's short pitch for Neighborhood Watch
- 8:00 SJ Prepared
- Ask about any neighborhood issues the Board should be addressing before adjourning at 9:00.
Membership drive:
Trixie follow up with Steve on materials.
Youth committee:
- Bob mentioned curb stenciling to Michael Hsieh, and he is interested. Doris said in the long past, they got paint and stencils donated. Reflective paint is about $8/can and stencils are $4 for 4 inch set. Kids could charge about $5 per home/decide what the money would be used for. Board discussed using the funds for a youth movie night at the park.
- Another possible project mentioned by Doris was doing a neighborhood collection of small hazardous waste items like batteries, and then taking them to a county collection site.
Lawrence Expressway bridge or crossing:
- Trixie talked to Linda, and Bob had heard from her staff. The idea was apparently mentioned by some Murdock residents at a meeting attended by Linda and her staff, and was concerning the idea of having a shorter route to walk to Orchard Supply and the Westgate West area.
- Linda has asked County Roads staff to work up the costs for a signal and crosswalk, but there is no funding at this point. The idea would not proceed without major discussion with the neighborhoods involved, and in any event would be under the next council representative. She had not wanted to have that discussion unless it were feasible and the costs were known.
Murdock Yahoo group:
- Bob mentioned the group maintained by the Country Lane Neighborhood Association, and asked if there were interest in having one for MNA. After discussion, the idea was tabled for now.
- It might be something to ask a volunteer to look into in the future.
Next meeting location: Doris Livezey's. May will be at Charles' if remodeling is finished.
The meeting adjourned at 9:30 p.m.
Respectfully submitted,
Trixie Johnson, Secretary
